Anybody know of a list of Chabad summer camps? I'm looking for camps that might need a 17 year old male NLS lifeguard with 1 year of experience.

Shmais has a list of yeshivas with related info. Why can't there be a list of camps?

I'm in the process of trying to work out the logistics of such a list. Anybody with PHP/MySQL programming skills is invited to help out!

There are lots of camps if you include day and overnight camps in North America. If you include international there are many more.

Also, it depends what kind of information you want to keep. Besides contact info you could keep session dates, number of campers boys / girls for what ages, number of counsellors
boys / girls, in/out of towners, web site and probably a dozen other things.

Yes, we do need a database...

My current list of information includes:
- References (previous year's counselors)
- Minimum age of counselors
- Weekly salary (for some counselors it is important)
- Date camp begins/ends
- Number of counselors needed (if you want to go as a group with friends)
- etc...

There has been a lack of communication for years- I know girls who call every Shliach in the Tzach List (or as many as possible) to find camps, and yet by the beginning of the summer, there are still many desperate Shluchim and equally as many frustrated would-be counselors.

I know the topic is camps, but the same type of database would be very useful for listing all yeshivos / high schools / seminaries. If you ever needed to find a place you'd find it's very difficult. Besides finding out about them all you need to find out what type of kids they cater to, what ages, philosophies, goals, tuition, etc.

you also want to include such info as:

-if internet assess provided
-car
-if bochurim and girls work in the same building (on different jobs) -some girls don't like it

i also wonder if you are coordinating it with shluchim office? or is it an independent project?

on technical note- check out

http://www.xoops.org

may be this is all you will need to run this project by yourself.

i can help little if i can- but i don't know php language. i know how to follow the instructions

A bit worse than "don't like it!" Totally inappropriate.

No, I'm not working through the Shluchim office. If they handle it the way they handle their Shlichus list, nobody will use it...

Thanks for the link, although I don't think that this will work (it's a content management system, not a database system.) What I'm looking at for ease of use is actually http://www.dadabik.org/ (I'd rather build one myself, if I knew how!)

if you search for "summer camp" on chabad.org

http://www.chabad.org/search/default.asp

you will come up with the list of chabad centers that have camp- email each one of them your info and references.

The list online is not by any means comprehensive, and doesn't supply enough info to enable girls/boys to make an informed decision before emailing the world!

that's why she told him to email each one. Hisht., it's not a competition. Everyone does their best and if you can do better, go for it!

roza,

the search on chabad.org is just for articles, not for centers.

hisht,

what do you mean if the shluchim office does it, then nobody will use it?

I said if they handle it the way they handle their Shlichus list, nobody will use it. Try asking them for the list. I had to pay them to get on a list where Shluchim can call me (whether or not they fit my criteria)... Not fun.

Maybe they can do better, but that was not my experience!

Additionally, the Shluchim Office won't list certain camps where the Shluchim don't fit their criteria.

Here's my plan for the website: [Warning: Technical]

The date you get in PHP, and you could even get the hebrew date.

Maybe there should be a certain security that not everybody could just access the site, veda"l.

I could just put a username/password access to the entire site (I have done that before) but I'm not sure how usable that would make it.

You can ask ppl. some safety questions before allowing them to get a user name. For example, ask for a reference, friend, shliach, mashpia, etc. that either you'll trust the name or you'll call up.

That sounds like WAY too much work for the moderator. I was thinking along the lines of giving a general username/password supplied through a school (i.e. USERNAME=baisrivka PASSWORD=halacha).

I'm not sure who you're trying to hide this from?

Hisht,
security was also my concern- you know boys and girls and private info...
while the project is important and shluchim have problem to find councelors and councelors have problem to find a job...

so maybe username and password isnt enough but somehow all or most movement on the site will have to be monitered.

Girls and boys information is NOT collected on the site; only Shluchim's information (which is considered public, AFAIK).

I really don't get the potential problem, what am I missing?

if only camp info- then it's fine- i thought potential counselors were supposed to post their resumes.
also winter camps info should be posted.

How about if prospective counselors can add their names and access the database of Shluchim freely, but Shluchim need to go through some kind of security check to access the counselors files?
