Here a fascinating story about the Baal Shem Tov. It clarifies the Baal Shem Tov’s role in comparison to the Arizal and R. Chaim Vital.

During an Aliyas Haneshamah (ascending of the soul), the Baal Shem Tov entered the chamber of R. Chaim Vital, the Baal Shem Tov ask him, “Why were you megashem the wisdom of Kabbalah? R. Chaim Vital then gave the Baal Shem Tov his pen and told him: “Shreibt Ir Besser”. I once heard from a mashpia (don’t remember his name) that the pen was the Alter Rebbe.

1) Does anyone know the source for this story?
2) Which Mashpia/Chassid does the vort come from?

The story (indeed mindboggling), appears in sefer "MIgdal Oz" by R' Yeshua Mudshein page 371-2 from a m.s. by the author of Beis Rebbe. The statement that the AR was the Pen of the Besht, is also there - in the Name of R.M.L. Shapiro (Rosh Yeshives Toras Emes Chabad in Yerushlyim).
