aveira to get drunk?

hey, this is probably a really stupid question, is it an aveira to get drunk, i dont think it is coz of all the yomtovs that we are encouraged to drink, but yeah is it an aveira?

YT we are encouraged to drink wine for simcha, not to get drunk.
IIRC Ramban in Noach (or one of the other classic meforshim there) has some nice things to say about it...

Get drunk on the wine of Torah--a better high and no hangover.

It is certainly not a Mitzvah.

If it leads to inappropriate behavior, it is most certainly an aveira!

But either way, it's not exactly very chassidish...

You can see many Great chassidim getting a liitle drunk in Farbrengens, you can see a liitle slap in a couple of faces, ppl rolling in the floor, making kulos and ppl dancing on top of the tables, everything in a chassidishe atmosphere trying to improve their Avoidas Hashem

The Rebbe made the Gzeira if not drinking more than 4. The reason as explained by the current Mashpi'im is that since getting drunk in most people cant control themselves, so what could come out of it would be bad things. And from first hand experience i have seen, when bochurim get drunk (a very Detroit thing to do) they start bein very "chaisidsh". There is a Gzeira, and the Rebbe said that if you are oiver the Gezeira, you should not go onto hi Tahalucha.

******** has a good point. If the gzeira was just so you don't get drunk, and you know that even ten l'chaims wont affect you, than what's wrong with saying a few more than four.

Like you said: "if...". you need to get your facts straight. The gzeira was 4. finished.

If a reason was given for the gzeira than when that reason doesn't apply neither does the gzeira.

I will take the risk of sounding chauvinistic: The gezeira was for men/bochurim. Women should not be drinking at all. VAKML.

1. Thank you Smirnoff for your words offered, but practically, the people posing these questions probably cannot understand what you wrote. It would help to write in english. other then that, I appreciate the chassidic way you write..! Keep it up!

2. Avrumi posed the qeustion why if you know you won't get drunk, why then, can you not have more then four...? Ask the same Qeustion:

If you know your not an am haaretz who will go to ask how to blow the Shofar (on Rosh Hashana Shechal Lihiyos B'Shabbos),

why can't you in fact blow the Shofar on Shabbos??

Same applies to all the other Takanos, we're not the ones to decide that we can stop a Takana where we see fit there shouldn't be a takanah there. What is Reform all about??
Torah is Torah. we cannot change it. Period.

Hope this informs you abit, and have a good night.

a tommim- I find it very rude how you say that people posing such questions wouldnt understand a hebrew response, I am a frum girl in a frum school and we learn ivrit, so in future I would prefer it if you didn't stereotype people like that.
