the issue as I wandered around Simchas Torah is that bocherim, baale batim etc...discussing the world series instead of the Torah lhavdil....

On one hand....taka a pathetic madrega.....during the week but all the more so on Shabbas/Yom Tov and all the moreso in shul during davening.....all the moreso by a baale bas who has smicha from 770 yet is in business....

but mtzad chesed who is disabled
Nu....dayenu.....at least they go to shul even if by reflex...

does it come from outreach....? etc etc aside....

My question is different: how on earth could such Yidden find the sitzfliesch to sit still through 3+ hours of a ball game?!? Unless they bring a sefer or listen to a shiur on a headset...

live and learn ... did you know Avrohom was known for visiting the sick? and here I thought G-d visited him when he was ill

and I thought the Rebbe also fought hard against assimilation into American culture, you know ... no TV, no secular studies, no college ...

This is why the Rebbe once asked LG why he is not excited that the Brooklyn Dodgers won?

I would like to mention a story with the Rebbe that would show how when Shluchim have the opportunity to discuss sports (go to games) they should not.

The story goes that in the early years there was a very famous speaker who came to speak by a program of a Shliach - but the speaker wanted to have a private plane for the morning after the speech to go to Washington (DC), so the shliach said he might as well hop along and go to NY and give a report to the Rebbe about the program that he ran the night before, this was all before a major sports event (either world series, supper bowl).
On the plane the shliach had to talk to the guy, and he didn’t know what to talk about, sports or something better.... in the end he talked to the guy about Judaism.

When he arrived in NY he send in a Du"ch ot he Rebbe, and the Rebbe called for him and asked him what he spoke with the person about on the plane - think for one second what would happen if the answer would be sports but anyway - he had a good answer. And the Rebbe said that he had made the right decision (in other words he did not have to politically correct and show that Rabbi’s also know about sports!)... And that was what brought Nachas to the Rebbe

The Shliach is Moshe Feller of MN, and the details are off - he went simply because it was an opportunity to go be near the Rebbe, and he had not intention of specifically discussing sports, and nothing to do with a sports game.

And Shimshon Stock was actually about going to the movies, not ballgames.

Both of the above as heard from their mouths.

The way I heard Feller tell the story, it was with Herman Wouk, and first he was going to interview him on the plane, instead he learned the Rebbe's biurim on hagodoh with him (IIRC, it was 11 Nissan time, in 5732).
The story was also printed a while back in the KC.

Regarding the point brought up that some Bochurim go to yeshivas specifically because that yeshiva allows sports, and that they should be going to the yeshiva to learn, you must remember that many of the Bochurim simple wouldn't be able to last in a Yeshiva where sports was illegal. So yes, it might be a shame that a Bochur is going to - say Morristown - just for its basketball hoop, but at least he's still in Yeshiva.

And it's what we call Yeridas HaDoros.

Re: Bochurim Kuch in Sports!!!!

I heard that the yeshivois in Miami and Morrstown make the Bochurim wear white shirts, and not t-shirts.

Could I understand the reason??
