Opening the door for Eliyahu

B"H

As we know there is a minhag to open the door for Eliyahu at the Pessach Seder. Recently I have entered a friendly debate with a friend of mine about the nature of this minhag. Based on my vague understanding of it, I was under the impression that we are actually opening the door for Eliyahu, and that he actually comes to every seder - whereas my friend does not seem to feel that this is the case.

Can anyone offer any additional Torah sources or insights in connection with this minhag?

Thank-you

Well, I'll tell you one: it scared the (dybbukim?) out of me when I opened the door and this guy is standing there smoking a ciggarette.

Well, don't keep us in suspense, who was it (I find it hard to believe that Eliyahu would smoke on Pesach!)

The door is opened to a public pathway and I believe it was just a neighbor...

I'm not a smoker, but es ligt mir in kop that someone who's machmir, refrains from smoking on Pesach. Since it's maasim bechol yom, I'm sure someone can either confirm or correct me on this (At any rate it doesn't seem right that Eliyahu would be smoking while fulfilling a shlichus of visiting all Yidden!)

if he is smoking, he might get "smokers cough" and blocked arteries, this would slow him down and he might not get round everyone that he has to visit!!!

My question is does Eliyahu only drink wine for his cup or is he ok with grape juice?

2) It has to do with "Leil Shimurim". (when opening the door) We show that we are not affraid of anything, and in this Zechus, Moashiach will come. (Alter Rebbes Shulchan oruch)

2) We open the door for Eliyahu haNavi, becuase we say "ki Ochal es Yaakov", and Yaakov took from Eliyahu as a mashkon the letter "VOV" so he will come and tell us good tidings of the arrival of Moshiach. (Mahari"d)

Nissan, shoyn is saying that that indicates that it isn't a halacha problem, nothing to do with whether or not we should smoke bichlal (I think).

And shoyn, it could be that the Rebbe Rashab never saw Blumenkrantz's book?
(hey, that was an attempt at humor, b4 you jump on me)

I do not have time to provide references on Eliyahu's Cos...I thought it was already on CT...but this comment I cannot ressist

How old is this Mundhsine?

Cigarettes in the time of the Rashab were probably paper rolled with Tobacco inside.....Pashut and
Today as documented by the B...there is plenty of Chometz and Treifus in them and anyone who thinks they are permitted on Pesach probably lets his wife use aNY LIPSTICK AS well and might as well wipe their mouth with the wheat based glue on a regular paper towel roll as well etc

I also just saw last night that in the Rebbe's Haggadah it is brought there also in the name of the Maharid that we open the door in order that Eliyahu should enter.
