Mitzad the chato'einu, the neshomo itself certainly needs a tikkun, and that is a necessary part of avodah bizman ha'golus. The Alter Rebbe is saying that tikkun of the neshomo is not the ultimate purpose of yeridas haneshomo lemato.

One uses the word 'neshama', and one the word 'nefesh'. They are not the same.

לתקן אותה =הנפש
שהנשמה אינה צריכה=נשמה
לתקן נפש החיונית והגוף=the job of the neshama

I'm not sure what is being discussed, but I learned that there are five spiritual levels of human spirit, nefesh ruach neshama chaya yechida.
So nefesh and neshama must be two different things.
