Yahrtzeit of R. Aryeh Leib of Shpolya, "The Shpolyer Zayde", 5572 (1811).

The Shpola Zeideh, a disciple of the Maggid of Mezritch, was a man of intense fervor, far more than any of his colleagues - the Maggid's other disciples. When he visited the Alter Rebbe in Liadi in 5569 or 5570 (1809 or 1810) he related that when he was a child of three he saw the Baal Shem Tov. "He placed his holy hand over my heart and ever since I have felt warm." (Hayom Yom, Teves 14)

Yahrtzeit of Rebbetzin Chanah, mother of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, of blessed memory, 5725 (1964).

Rebbetzin Chanah had special talents and refinement of character that was apparent from her early youth and her perspicacity was outstanding. She was a tower of support for her husband, Reb Levi Yitzchok's courageous communal work of preserving and disseminating Torah and Mitzvot. After his exile in 5569 (1939), she bravely traveled to join him and, by making ink out of local herbs which she herself gathered, enabled him to write his amazing Torah insights published years later.
In the year 5725(1964-5), in memory of his mother, Rebbetzin Chanah, the Rebbe began his practice to explain at every Shabbos Farbrengen a comment of Rashi on the Chumash, according to both the plain meaning and also esoteric teachings implicit within the commentary.

Yahrtzeit of R. Baruch, the Alter Rebbe's father, 5552 (1791).

Reb Baruch lived in Liozne and was very bothered that his son, the Alter Rebbe, would give him lots of fatherly honor. He would complain that it is improper for his son, of such holy stature, that the Shechina speaks through him, to stand up before his father. With that he traveled from city to city until he came to Solish, Hungary.
When he arrived in Solish, one of the wealthy men of the city invited him over for the day. The man owned a Brewery, and saw that he had special blessings in his business that day. Realizing that this blessing came because of his guest, he requested that Reb Baruch stay with him permanently, and he would provide all of his needs.
Reb Baruch lived there for many years. When he felt he was going to pass away, all of the city's respected gathered to see him. They asked him if he had any children so they can inform them of his passing. Reb Baruch told them that he has four children living in Russia, all Rabbis, two of them need to be informed, one just needs a hint, and the fourth (the Alter Rebbe) knows on his own.
A very honorable funeral was done, and he was laid to rest in a respectable plot.

" . . as is well known, that the Alter Rebbe very much esteemed his rulings . . ." [Sichah, Purim, 5716]
" . . . [The Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch] was based on the authorities, Early and Later, and at their head, the Magen Avraham." [Introduction of the Alter Rebbe's sons to his Shulchan Aruch]

Yahrtzeit of R. Achai Gaon, 4291 (511).

Tishrei 11/September 17/Tuesday
The day called "G-tt's Nomen" ("HaShem's Name").
[check message length]Options: Automatically parse URLs:" . . . From the Baal Shem Tov: The reason they call the day after Yom Kippur "G-tt's Nomen": The names 'huv' or "Kadosh Baruch Hu" are only what relates to the world . . . as far as His essence it's not possible to call Him any Name in the world. If a person sins it affects the name 'huv, as is known. In the days of forgiveness there are ascensions before 'huv; thus on the day after Yom Kippur there's no specific Name, only "G?tt's Nomen": "HaShem's Name". [Sefer Haminhagim, p. 59]
[R. Avrohom of Buczacz, in Eshel Avrohom, Orach Chaim 644, cites another reason (also from the Baal Shem Tov): During Aseres Yemei Teshuvah we use the title "HaMelech HaKadosh". On this day we go back to saying "HaShem's name, "HaKeil HaKadosh".] Sefaradim call this day "Simchat Kohen" (The Kohen's Holiday) because the Kohen Gadol would make a Yom Tov when he came out in peace from the Kodesh Hakodashim. Morrocan Jews make a Seudah for the Kohanim: Libyan and Jerba (Tunisian) Kohanim don't do work today.

There's a custom to rise early to Shacharis today [so the Accuser can't accuse us of inconsistency in our resolve to do Teshuvah] [Alter Rebbe's Shulchan Aruch Orach Chaim: 642]

Moshe Rabbeinu taught the laws of Shabbos, [Shemos 35:1, Rashi] opened the first judicial session with the help of Yisro, [Shemos 18:13-23, Rashi] and called for contributions of materials for the Mishkan. [Shemos 31:18, Rashi]

Yahrtzeit of Mar Bar Rav Ashi, one of the last editors of the Talmud Bavli, 4226 (466). [Igeres Rav Sherira Gaon]

Tishrei 12/September 18/

Jews continued to bring material for the Mishkan. [Shemos 35:21, Shemos Rabbah 5]

Yahrtzeit of R. Avraham "The Malach", only son of the Mezeritcher Magid, author of Chesed L'Avraham, 5537, (1776).
When the Alter Rebbe came to Mezritch, the Maggid set him up to learn with his son. For three hours the Alter Rebbe would teach him Nigleh, and for three hours the "Malach" would teach the Alter Rebbe Chassidus. The Alter Rebbe used to change back the clock when they were learning Chassidus to gain extra time of learning from Reb Avraham.

Tishrei 13/September 19/Thursday
Yahrtzeit of our holy Master and Teacher, R. Shmuel, "the Rebbe MaHaRaSh", 5643 (1882). " . . His life and work is best summarized by his saying, "The world says if you can't go under an obstacle, you have to go over, and I say —go over in the first place." The simple meaning of this is that in Torah and Mitzvos we have to "go over in the first place": not make calculations, and when that's not enough, and you have to go above measure and limit, you go "over" —the Rebbe MaHaRaSh said "go over in the first place", in a way that's above calculations and limits." [Sichah, Tishrei 13, 5739].

Yahrtzeit of R. Akiva Eiger, outstanding Talmudic authority, 5598 (1837). The Mitteler Rebbe was close with him, and said for him the Maamar, "Al Tatzer Es Moav." [Beis Rebbe, Vol. II, P. 7]
