chatting with non-religious or not jewish of opposite gender

Also, (this might have been discussed, i'm not sure). Let's say a single guy who'se not religious or a non-jewish person of opposite gender talks to you. Like let's say family friends of neighbor or stam anyone, like just chatting, and You don't want to turn them off by ignoring them or saying i can't talk to you. It would probably turn them off. Can you chat with them? Is there a problem with that? And what if you know forsure that it won't turn into a problem?

Megillah

Esther seems to have kept everything in check. No doubt she knew at the outset that she could. When in doubt, error on the side of caution.

Just be polite. "How is your mother feeling? Do you like your new job? Nice weather today." Is fine, and go away as soon as you can "oh, i left something on the stove" "well I have a big test tomorrow, have a nice day!" etc...
Don't get into philosophical debates, and life altering dmc's... it's not your place, but ignoring ppl, or being cold is very rude, and lacks derech eretz.
You need to gauge every situation on its own.
