eruv in crown heights

i see there's a lot of controversy about the eiruv. my question is - just out of curiosity - not lekanter, why are eiruv's in the us so controversial and yet so excepted in israel? what's the difference?

I don't purport to be an expert on this - far from it, but might one point be that an Eruv becomes exponentially more complicated in an area where many non-Jews reside? This would obviously not be the case in most of Israel. I assume that in a country that is predominantly Jewish, the "ownership" issues surrounding an Eruv are far more straightforward.
