Expectations of religous Jewish communities

I was wondering when a religious Jew is being raised and in Jewish communities are there expectations that you will live your life in particular way and according to Jewish rules by this I mean you will get married pitch in with the family and study torah daily, rather than follow your heart and do what you want to do i.e. go travelling go to a secular college

Part of my reason for asking is I am coming to the conclusion that in Jewish communities they have set expectations they go to their own schools and in some ways avoid the secular world

Yes. Every community is different, but religious communities tend to have expectations that children with grow into adults and live their lives in a "proper" way. Some of these expectations stem from Jewish law and some are cultural. Some communities believe it is "proper" to avoid the secular world to a degree, but that's not universal.

Following one's heart is a lovely notion, but its not the only thing that goes into making a good decision. If you are married with children and your heart tells you to run off and be a poet, that does not mean you should run out on your family. I would hope that good communities try to encourage their members (especially the young ones) to make good decisions.

If you are trying to decide whether you should follow your heart or remain confined to some family obligations, I would recommend that you find a few community members you trust and talk over your situation with them. It is generally a bad idea to follow what you "percieve" is the community view of right and wrong since the ones who speak the loudest are not always speaking the truth.
