Signs of Moshiach in current events

I don't usually read the news, but this report came my way and I thought it was very Moshiach'dik: The US army and navy sends relief supplies to victims of a cyclone.

US airlifts aid to Myanmar, UN urges junta to cooperate
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Monday, May 12th 2008, 7:33 AM

YANGON, Myanmar - The United States delivered its first relief supplies to Myanmar on Monday, as the U.N. urged the reclusive nation to open its doors to foreign experts who can help up to 2 million cyclone victims facing disease and starvation.

The military C-130 cargo plane, packed with 28,000 pounds of supplies, flew out of the Thai air force base of Utapao and landed in Yangon, capping prolonged negotiations to persuade Myanmar's military government to accept U.S. help.

Several Myanmar Cabinet ministers, military officers and the top U.S. diplomat in Myanmar, Shari Villarosa, greeted the plane.

Government spokesman Ye Htut said the aid, which was transferred to Myanmar army trucks, would be ferried by air force helicopters to the worst-hit Irrawaddy delta later Monday. Two more U.S. air shipments were scheduled to land Tuesday.

The official death toll from the May 3 Cyclone Nargis is 28,458 with another 33,416 still missing. But the U.N. Assistant Secretary-General Catherine Bragg and others have said the death toll could reach 100,000 or higher.

Though international assistance has started trickling in, the authoritarian government has barred most foreign experts who are experienced in managing humanitarian crises.

Richard Horsey, a spokesman for U.N. humanitarian operations, in Bangkok, Thailand, said clean drinking water, shelter, medical support and food were sorely lacking.

"The authorities of the country need to open up to an international relief effort. There aren't enough boats, trucks, helicopters in the country to run the relief effort of the scale we need," he said. "It's urgent that the authorities do open themselves up."

The junta has made a huge concession in letting the U.S. the fiercest critic of its human rights record bring in relief.

The U.S. plane carried mosquito nets, blankets and water in an operation dubbed "Joint Task Force Caring Response."

Also on the plane was Adm. Timothy J. Keating, the commander of the U.S. military in the Pacific, who will try to personally negotiate with the junta for a larger U.S. role in providing relief.

U.S. Marine spokesman Lt. Col. Douglas Powell said there are 11,000 service members and four ships in the region for an annual military exercise, Cobra Gold, that could be harnessed to help the mercy mission.

Three U.S. Navy ships in the Bay of Bengal were sailing closer to Myanmar on Monday, ready to aid cyclone victims if they are given permission, Vice Adm. Doug Crowder told reporters in Jakarta, Indonesia.

And if someone who anyway reads the news encounters other reports that indicate that express the Rebbe's words that we are living in the threshold of ge'ulo, pleast post!

One week later: huge earthquake in China.

Tens of thousands of people are feared dead after the biggest earthquake in three decades struck China.

Aid is being offered by the United States and the European Union.

Acharei Kedoshim 5751:
Quote:
In connection with the redemption, we find the prophecy, "And Kingship will be the L-rd's." This includes kingship, not only over the Jews, but also over the gentile nations as well. Hence, as a preparation for Mashiach's coming, it is also important to spread the observance of the Seven universal Laws commanded to the descendants of Noach.

In this context, it is worthy to mention how the activities of the world and that of the gentile nations appear to be assisting the coming of the Redemption. [...]

...we see how the United States, the most powerful nation in the world, has dedicated its resources for the purpose of charity and education, two of the most fundamental activities necessary to create a stable environment in the world.

For this purpose, the United States has sent hundreds of its soldiers to help hungry and starving people in a far off corner of the world. Instead of using its airplanes for war, it employed them to reach those people who require such assistance. And instead of using its wealth for the benefit of its own people alone, it gave of that wealth to save the lives of unfortunate people and children. Although the people of this country had little contact with these unfortunate people previously, as soon as they heard of their suffering, they volunteered their assistance.

Myanmar Junta Still Blocking Much Cyclone Aid
Reuters
By THE NEW YORK TIMES
Published: May 12, 2008
This article is by a reporter for The New York Times in Myanmar and Seth Mydans in Bangkok.

YANGON, Myanmar A trickle of aid shipments arrived in Myanmar on Sunday, more than a week after a powerful cyclone smashed the country, but the ruling military junta continued to bar major shipments to more than a million of the storms hard-hit survivors.

The junta is also continuing to deny entry to foreign aid workers, who relief officials say are needed to prevent more deaths.

Reuters reported that the state-run Myanmar television said the death toll from the May 3 cyclone had risen to 28,458, with 33,416 people still missing. But a number of relief officials say the death toll is most likely much higher.

The United Nations World Food Program said that only one visa had been approved out of 16 it had requested and the aid group World Vision said it had requested 20 visas but received two.

In the port at Yangon, shipments of rice were being loaded onto two freighters bound for Malaysia and Singapore, apparently as part of a pre-existing contract. Nearby, another ship was being loaded with rice bound for the Irrawaddy Delta, which bore the brunt of the storm.

Some water and electricity had been restored by Sunday in Yangon, the countrys capital, but prices for rice and fuel had increased sharply, along with prices for candles while the power was out.

In an illustration of the difficulties aid agencies face in distributing supplies, a boat carrying some of the first aid to survivors in the Irrawaddy Delta sank, apparently after hitting a submerged tree, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said.

The boat was believed to have hit a submerged tree in the delta. The accident highlighted the enormous logistical difficulties of delivering aid, with roads washed away and much of the delta turned to swamp.

As aid shipments continued on Sunday, a spokesman for the World Food Program, Paul Risley, said it amounted to about one-tenth of what was needed, in addition to a major logistical operation.

The World Food Program said that the authorities had released 38 tons of high-energy biscuits it had confiscated on Friday and that 4.4 tons of biscuits had been delivered Sunday.

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies said that three of its aircraft delivered 14 tons of shelter materials.

The United States was preparing to send in its first aircraft with relief supplies on Monday.

Authorities were also reported to be confiscating aid from local Burmese residents who try to donate supplies to victims, one resident said in an e-mail message.

In one case, a group of people on their way to distribute small personal donations on the outskirts of Yangon was stopped by district security forces, the resident said. They were told they could only distribute aid through the security forces. In another case, the resident said, security forces confiscated the car of a woman who was on her way to deliver sacks of rice to victims outside the city.

In the less-devastated areas, the military junta was focused on a constitutional referendum on Saturday intended to cement its power after a campaign of intimidation, even as it continued to restrict foreign aid shipments. No preliminary results had been announced by late Sunday morning, but the state-run media said the voting had proceeded without incident.

Relief experts say the aid being distributed is a fraction of what is needed to help as many as 1.5 million people facing starvation and disease. The military appeared to be diverting some resources from cyclone victims to the referendum. One resident of Yangon, speaking by phone, said refugees who had sought shelter in schoolhouses were forced out so the buildings could be used as polling places.

The Rebbe's point was (and is) the generosity and yosher of the wealthy nation that gives (not the issues of the nations needing assistance).

Fine. By every natural disaster get all excited about the humantarian aid, and about the clear Moshiach signs that it shows, that Moshiach is here, and all the remozim and rimzei remozim etc.
What is the point in this?
OTOH, if it makes you excited, gezunterheit.

preventing the production of Kosher chickens does not seem like the geulah to me. Neither does the price increases (kneged a passuk in NAch) or the lack of Ahavas Yisroel for various Jews.

It seems there is much greater evidence that we are in the era of Moahiach than a cyclone in Burma or an earthquake in China though these are indeed pieces of cloth in the greater tapestry of life.
