so does that mean 4 is preferable, but if 8 will sit better on your head, one is permitted to wear 8, or since 8 is worn, the original reason is no longer relevant, and 8 is what one must strive to wear?

And maybe we shouldn't do any chabad menhagim that are done and based on us doing it b/c the rebbeim did it ?

Great! Thank you for further proving my point. Maybe you shouldn't be so rash and make fun of things you don't know after all

Is there any evidence at all that the Rebbe was makpid on such a yarmulke? Or perhaps that was the most common one etc.
-----You said that and it sure doesn't sound like you were so sure if there was a reason or not. So don't make fun b/c maybe we will find out that there is a reason and you would only be embarrasing yourself !

If you would bother to read what I wrote in context, you would see that there is no reason for me to be embarrassed, even if it will be proven that there is a reason/hakpodo.
But I am afraid you wouldn't recognize a "tongue in cheek" if it was staring you in the face.

The sefer Shaare Shalom on Pesachim wasnt by me when i wrote the post, but when i was in ny for yud shvat i saw it in kehos and overthere it says the reason is because of avodah zarah (the pope wears davka four-sided - SHOYN) and some other reason i forgot.

To RebAyzl: If you really believe that the Rebbe goes to the Ohel every erev rosh chodesh and 15th (because he is in 770 during the rest of the days) then wait every time for the rebbe to come back (the Tzfatim will notify you)

The Shoes of the Rebbe were Bally, if anybody cares (i dont know the holes, ask leibel groner maybe he will make up a number for you...).

The Rebbe's yarmulke had six parts and it was done from silk.

Someone once told me that it's because Ze'ir Anpin has has parts. (I didn't know that prior to this person saying it)

But I'm no Mekubal, and I really have no idea what's the connection between a yarmulke and ze'ir anpin...

Aw, you mean my Z"A idea when I saw the thread wasn't original?

Wait, the 8-sided yarmulkes are because 8 is l'maala min hateva, and zayin r'ki'im plus aretz, and the four-sided is because arba kanfot ha'aretz....

This would be for the same reason that most Chassidim have the minhag of a single daled knot on the tefillin shel rosh, because the double-daled forms a tzeilem?
