Exactly my point. It's not the 'type' of music (as in fast, slow, rock, reggae...).
It's the composer, singer, where it comes from and the true meaning.
A niggun we know is ok from The Rebbe and The Rebbeim. Other stuff, we little ppls totally can't.
Makes sense?

Yo Eya ani shoel... yo eya hateimoni.

I have never heard this song at a wedding, even though i think its rather cute. Interesting that you know this song, which isn't that popular among chassidishe circles.

Actualy, I heard it at many LUBAVITCHER weddings, and as someone who's first language is Hebrew, it's quite hard to miss the very first words of the song, "Yashavti al kiseh chashmal, shalchu oti lamavet!" Very cute Hiskashrus...

I heard in the name of R. Greenglass that any non-niggunim songs are "Metamtem hamoach vehalev"!

Light Jewish music

The story with Matisyahu and all variations of commentary on it led me to think about the following question: What makes a music Jewish or not Jewish? Is it the content, the form, the (current) frumkeit of the singer and/or composer, all of the above?

Is there some definition that makes a piece of music more Jewish than another? Is a niggun that is composed by a chossid a more Jewish piece of music than a hip-pop song that is composed by another frum chossid (I am not talking about anyone in particular)?

I am not focusing on musicality of a piece (i.e., its ability to relate the emotions and thoughts through the music itself). Let's use an axiom that everyone has different tastes and while one person would be more inspired by a piece of Classical music, another would be bored by it, but would be equally inspired by a piece of hip-pop.
