Using mirror for men

How do Chabad poskim hold on men using a mirror? I have heard that there are opinions that a man should not a mirror at all, even to fix his tefillin (he should use fingers).

But now I remembered the famous story with Alter Rebbe taking apart a snuffbox to use its cover as a mirror for making sure his tefillin is in place.

How trustworthy is this story?

The story of the AR is reliable.
I don't think one can extrapolate from there a psak concerning mirrors in general.
