Question Getting Back on Track

[I don't know if there already is such a thread; if there is please point me in the right direction]

Ruchnius life sometimes feels like a down escalator... ya gotta keep going up or else you're further down. Unfortunately, sometimes you don't even realize how far down you've come until it's REALLY far.

When a person realizes that they have fallen, and know they (at least somewhat) want to do Teshuva...
-Should they immediately take on all of the Chumras/Mitzvos/Hanhagos they had when they were Chassidish?
-Should they take it one step at a time till they reach their former stature?
-Is there one place it's most important to start?
-Is Sur Meira more important (for the time being) than Asei Tov?
-Any other suggestions/tips?

i think it`s a great issue.
especially now on aseres yemey tshuvo.
my opinion is, that you have to take both ways. from one hand to have the decision that i am turning back totally. i.e. i`ll be the best i can. i`ll change totally etc.
from the other hand, you have to take thing proportionally, and go step by step, unless you`ll fall back...
i.e. the feeling has to be - a total change.
acting is step by step.
i think it is a good way of interpreting - teshuva beshaite chode uverigee chode - thsuva is to be made in one hour and one second.

Adin Steinsaltz expounds on this point in his book Teshuvah: A Guide for the Newly Observant Jew See Chapters All or Nothing, and Where to Start.

i think that one step at a time is much more powerful and heloful because if u take everything upon ursklef at once then it really hard and nothing will get much better then it was but if u take one thing upon urslef at a time u can keep adding until eventually u dont have to for example...girls..if they went off and they are not tzinua and they listen to english music and the curse or... so the first thing they could work on is tznua-covering her knees and elbows at all time after a few weeks since it isnt such a hard kabala they take upon themslefs no more english music... and after they get used to each thing they keep taking upon themselfs more because they feel greater about themslefs getting higher!! as apose to taking everything upon urlsef and wearing long soks longer skirts and sleeves no loshon hara no english music its just too much at once i mean id they r able to do it great!! but i think its more powerful one at a time

doesn't that depend on what steps need to be taken? That has to be assessed first, and then given an order of priorities.
