Efforts to Ban Circumcision in California

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/06/05/us...er=rss&emc=rss

I am greatly concerned about this as should all Jews everywhere.
Notice the names of the person who is pushing this legislation.

Should they be able to make this a federal law and circumcision becomes illegal
what will they take from us next? It's a slow chipping away at us, very similar to what happened in Nazi Germany and Russia. First you can't circumcise, then you can't do something else. This was done to us before is Chabad actively working to fight this?

From Santa Monica Daily Press:

Quote:
In response to the rising backlash against a proposed initiative that would have made circumcision for minors a criminal act, the main proponent of the measure announced her intention to withdraw the measure Monday.

Jena Troutman said that it was never her intention to get into the religious aspect of the circumcision debate. Jewish groups feel the initiative is an attack on their religion, which calls for infants to be circumcised.

Youve got to do whats right for the city that youre in and I think that I could do something much better thats more representative of what we want locally to inform parents that the procedure is not recommended by the National Academy of Pediatrics, Troutman said.

Troutman submitted the original petition, entitled the S. Monica MGM Bill Ballot Initiative, on May 19. She would have had 180 days after publishing information about the bill to collect over 6,000 signatures.

Had she done that, the measure which would have made circumcising a child under the age of 18 a misdemeanor offense punishable by a $1,000 fine or a year in jail would have gone on the November 2012 ballot.

However, the hue and cry raised within the religious community, and what she felt was a misrepresentation of her goals by news media, caused Troutman to seek another way of furthering her real agenda.

Its about educating parents that they have options, Troutman said. Thats the goal.

Im not a politician, just a mom who cares, Troutman said.

Reform Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels, of Beth Shir Shalom in S. Monica, called the decision wonderful news.

Im stunned, but pleasantly so, because it sought to make circumcision criminal in S. Monica, which was pretty horrible, Comess-Daniels said.

Its not an easy thing to take a public stance and retract it, Comess-Daniels said. I give her credit for that, and I hope its the last we see of this.

Mayor Richard Bloom, who announced the news on his Facebook page shortly after Troutman called him to tell him of her decision, said that when the initiative is formally off the table, it will be time to fight the San Francisco version.

It's time to fight the SF one that received over 7100 signatures.

I think for the biggest part this is motivated totally different then you think.

Maybe its for the biggest part because people really see harm in that.
Maybe for an other part, considering the rise of atheism and SF being one of the most progressive area's, it's motivation stems from the urge to go specifically against religious Idea's, especially those who seem to oppose common sense in the eye of the beholder.

This nonsensical initiative will go nowhere. It violates the First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion. Those of us who live in California have learned to ignore what flows out of San Francisco.

Governor Signs Bill Preventing Ban on Bris Milah

California - Governor Jerry Brown announced on Sunday that he signed a bill preventing local authorities from banning the practice of male circumcision.

The bill, which takes effect immediately, comes in the wake of an effort by a San Francisco group opposed to male circumcision to enforce a city-wide ban of the practice in a November ballot measure.

That effort was struck down in late July by a California judge who said it would infringe on religious freedom. The measure was removed from the November ballot.

The measure, which garnered 12,000 signatures of support, would have made it a misdemeanor crime to circumcise a boy before he is 18 years old in San Francisco, regardless of the parents religious beliefs.

I'll bet that if some research was done to discover who initiated this legislation it would turn out to be secular Jews. Ever notice the last names of the people who take out anti-religion (not just anti-******mas) billboard advertisments at the Lincoln Tunnel in NYC every December ?
