גילוח הזקן במספרים אף שלא כעין תער (the words of the Rebbe in that letter) does not mean "slight trimming".

The letter of the Rashab in v 1 proves nothing more than the Rashab did not want people in Collel Chabad who trimmed their beard. No one ever disputed that.

The letter in v 2 p 927 (not 527 as written above several times) is speaking Halachakly, which is why he uses the termonology להשחית. Uposhut.

Thank you for the correction. Are you suggesting that a 'slight trimming' would be approved by the Rebbeim of Chabad?

I have never suggested any such thing. In fact, I have written the opposite many times, including my very last post.

That is a good news. May it leads you to grow from strengh to strengh.

Shouldn't trimming the beard (i.e., cutting off hair with scissors, but not completely; e.g., to "shape" the beard) suffer from the same problem as cutting it off completely without using a razor, i.e., begged isha?

Trimming the Beard

Trimming the Beard

Rav Chaim Kanievsky, shlita, wrote the following in his sefer Orchos Yosher, section 5 (he does not mention the Tzemach Tzedek):

"Targum Yonoson states that one who commits this transgression violates the prohibition: “A man shall not wear woman’s dress.” This applies even if he trims his beard using scissors. Sefer HaChinuch also follows this view and adds that one [who does so] also violates the prohibition: “You shall not follow their statutes.” This is quoted by the Chofetz Chayim in his Sefer HaMitzvos HaKotzer (negative commandment 177)."

Why do some Orthodox Jews permit trimming or even shaving the beard?
