anybody know - who sang Ashreinu - from Sruli Williger's new tape, originally? I know it from ages ago.

btw - interesting that he chose a Chabad nigun for his tape, Rachmana. Has a hora beat ...

I heard that he learned in Lubavitcher Yeshiva. Dunno whether that's true or not, but otherwise he could have just decided he likes it from Fried.

heard it was Oholei Torah for a few years

anyway, "Shlock Rock almost On Broadway" is quite popular

as I've said previously (a few hundreds posts ago in this thread?) it's not for those who are raised on Chasidishe niggunim, but could be appropriate for those who will recognize the songs the tape/CD parodies, because those who know the original words will find his parodies brilliant

then there's the I Hate Racheim tape and the newest Rechnitzer Rejects ... a gantz yor Purim apparently

www.nigun.ru has a bunch of Niggunim, many in mp3, but I doubt that's what you're asking...

www.olam4israel.com has one song free- "Ani Ohev Kol Yehudi".

www.yehuda.org has a few of Yehuda!'s songs available for free.

Not for download, but to hear complete songs online, www.thinkjewish.com/fried_music.html has a bunch of Avraham Fried's tapes (older).

These are the LEGAL sites I'm aware of...

Anything else is slightly Halachically questionable.

(Hey! There's even a thread about that! )

Going back to Piamenta, they performed in front of the Rebbe MANY times
In an interview with Avi Piamenta:

Q: Did you ever sing before the Rebbe?

A: Many times. At children’s rallies, at kos shel bracha, at the groundbreaking for 770 in 5748, on Hei Teves 5747. Once we even passed by the Rebbe for kos shel bracha with our instruments. We received answers from the Rebbe about our recordings. I remember that for the first tape that I made for children, I got a very positive response.

Rebayzl, two comments:

1. Ask Avi
2. It is always quite obvious when the Rebbe is giving a positive or negative response.

Sorry - that was a rather dumb question.

in extensive previous conversations about elevating non-Jewish music to kedusha, it was concluded (by some) that only tzadikim can do this (Napoleon's March and Ha'Aderes V'Ha'Emuna).

It was also pointed out that in some cases, ordinary people took non-Jewish tunes and used them for holy purposes and the Rebbe approved such as the song Ha'Rabbi Shlita.

Here's another example:

The bachurim-shluchim in Morocco wanted to teach "hareini" and "ach tzadikim" to the children of Tzivos Hashem. They took a popular tune and used it for the words of “hareini” and “ach.” They sang it at rallies and clubs, and the children loved singing it. It was the victory march that Moroccan soldiers sang when they went out to fight against the neighboring Algerian army over oil in the Saharan desert. The tmimim wanted to elevate the march to kedusha as the French national anthem was raised to kedusha.

What a surprise they were in for, a few months later. The group of shluchim who had returned for Simchas Torah 5745 when their period of shlichus was over, brought some children along with them to the Rebbe. On motzoei Simchas Torah, the bachurim took the children to kos shel bracha. As the Rebbe poured the wine, he motioned to them to go up and sing the niggun, “hareinu mekabel” in front of everyone!

Another one of these interesting anecdotes just happened:

A mother from my parents' community just called me and asked me "what I though about Udi Ulman". After hemming and hawing a bit, I told her that his stuff is a bit grub... Her response was, "That's exactly what I though I'd hear..."

Her son had heard Ulman's stuff at a school Chanukah party and came home with it. As soon as it was played, this woman, a BT of about 6-7 years, decided that there was something wrong with it. She wanted to ask a few people before she told her kid off, but she got the same response from a number of us...

Grub is grub. I think if people aren't admitting it, it's because, either a) they're deluding themselves, or b) they might be a bit fargrubt themselves...

Why is Udi Ulman Grub?
IMHO, you can usually tell by the volume of the percussion instruments. In general, when the drums are louder than the rest of the music, it has a very grub feel.

A correction: at a recent concert, I asked Avi Piamenta about that letter from the Rebbe that I've mentioned on other occasions. He said that the long letter that he had shown Heschel Greenberg did not have to do with this inyan per se, and instead, quoted the Rebbe's answer (verbatim) "Ask a rov and an askan, and sfeikoi lechumra". I did not have the chance to find out all the details, but I will bezH make that attempt eventually.

Heads up for Purim 5765 (together with Moshiach, G-d willing)--

Purim in Skver is a really leibedig recording that kept me in high spirits all through Adar. Highly recomended (unless you can't tolerate a Galitzianer accent --"Ureer Human...Burich Mordechai haYehidi").

I hope I am posting this in the right place, I searched and can't seem to find what I am looking for.
Everyone seems to take it for granted that music affects your neshama and you connect yourself with the composer, can somebody post sources in chassidus for these facts?
